5 Steps to Power Wash a Tennis Court
Step 1 – Preparation
This is arguably the most important step. Just like most things in life, proper preparation makes just about anything much easier. Power washing preparation includes turning off any power outlets or fixtures in the area you plan to wash. Next, remove any benches, equipment or other items that are on the court. I recommend removing the net, but sometimes this can be a serious pain, so it’s up to you. Next, rinse down the surrounding area of the tennis court, you want to soak any plants, bushes, flowers and even grass to prevent damage from the cleaning process.
Step 2 – Apply Cleaning Detergent
Whether you mixed your own detergent or bought a bottle of “power washing cleaner” from home, it’s time to apply it to the surface of the court. The entire tennis court. I am going to let you in on a litte industry secret. The professionals use a mixture of water and sodium hypochlorite (commercial bleach). Once applied, allow approximately 15 minutes of dwell time. This will allow the detergent to soak into the surface and loosen up all that dirt, grim and mildew.
Step 3 – Soft Wash
It’s time to power wash. Although you will be using a “soft wash” technique. Soft wash is a term for using low water pressure to prevent damage. Want to learn more about soft washing? This allows me to strategically clean the tennis court without having to redo areas or worry about the hose getting in my way. When using a surface cleaner on a painted asphalt tennis court, it is important to go slow to prevent causing any lines or streaks.
Step 4 – Rinse
This part is very important being that most cleaning detergents will have bleach as an active ingredient. Failing to properly rinse the cleaning detergent and the surrounding area can cause staining or harming plants. Be sure you approach this step similarly, pick a corner and work your way around the court being sure to rinse all of the soap suds off the court. During this step, you should also be soaking the area around the court, all those plants and grass you pre-rinsed in step 1.
Step 5 – Finish Up
The last step, you’ve almost made it. Now is the time when you want to restore power to the area, if it was turned off. You also want to reinstall the net if it was removed and bring back any furniture or items you moved off. Once all this is done, congratulations! You power washed an asphalt tennis court.
