Concrete vs Cement

It’s that time of year to start power washing concrete, but have you ever wondered, what the difference between cement and concrete is? I know I have. These words are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things. So now you’re wondering how to tell the difference between the two. Well you’re in luck! That’s because you don’t need to tell the difference.

Cement is actually just an ingredient in the mixture that makes concrete. Furthermore, concrete is the final product, consisting of a mixture of cement, water and aggregate.

Now you know the basic difference so you could technically stop reading if you want too. However, I am going to get a little more in-depth so you can fully understand what each term means. I’ll even cover basic maintenance and how often you should power wash concrete.

What is Cement?

Like previously mentioned, cement is not actually a surface but an ingredient used to create a surface. Cement makes up approximately 15% of the mixture used to make concrete. The other 85% consists of water and other aggregates. These percentages can change depending on the desired thickness and workability needed. The purpose of cement in this mixture is to strongly bind the aggregates together creating concrete.

Cement is one of the most used materials in the world. This is due to its strength and how well it combines with other materials. Cement is commonly used in grout, mortar and even stucco.

What is Concrete?

The final product of mixing water, cement and aggregate is concrete. Once fully mixed, this combination tends to bind very quickly. Although the exact time can change, concrete will harden quickly once completely mixed. This is why you see trucks transporting concrete still mixing.

I’ll give you a good example of the speed at which concrete hardens. If you used concrete to form a driveway, it will only take a couple hours to set. Once set, the driveway will fully harden within a few weeks. Once hardened, this concrete driveway will last years and years, especially if routinely maintained with power washing. This concrete mix is actually designed to continue to strengthen overtime. That is why building foundations for homes and business are very commonly made of concrete.

Concrete Maintenance

Although concrete is one of the most durable surfaces out there, it can still weaken if not properly maintained. This can cause cracks and even collapse over time. The best way to prevent this from occurring is to apply a quality waterproofing sealer. More important than that, is routine power washing cleanings. Like everything in this world, concrete will last longer when cleaned. How often should you power wash concrete? Well that depends on where you live and what the concrete is exposed to. A rule of thumb is usually to power wash concrete every 2 years
